Count the workarounds, not just the license

Buying software can look less expensive because the cost is visible and immediate. The hidden cost appears later: duplicate entry, brittle integrations, spreadsheet handoffs, manual approvals, and teams adapting their best processes to somebody else’s generic model.

When those workarounds become the operating system of the business, custom software can be the more conservative choice. It replaces a web of recurring friction with one system designed around the work itself.

Build the smallest durable advantage

Custom does not mean building everything. Strong product strategy identifies the few workflows that create real differentiation and integrates commodity services everywhere else.

The goal is not ownership for its own sake. It is control where control matters: customer experience, operational speed, proprietary knowledge, and the ability to evolve without asking a vendor for permission.

Good work gets clearer as it moves forward.
